Dear Parents/Guardians,
The state of Indiana requires all third-grade students enrolled in public and nonpublic accredited schools to take the Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD) assessment. MCCSC second-grade students will also take the IREAD assessment this year. IREAD measures foundational reading standards and is given to students each spring. Based on the Indiana Academic Standards, IREAD is a summative assessment that was developed in accordance with House Enrolled Act 1367 (also known as Public Law 109 in 2010).
IREAD is a fixed-form test, meaning all students will receive the same online test questions when taking this assessment. It consists of three sections of multiple-choice questions assessing vocabulary and comprehension. Please see our testing schedule on the next page.
2nd Grade:
If a student does not take or does not pass the IREAD, under State Board rule, schools must provide additional intervention(s) for these students. The student will also need to retake the IREAD assessment in 3rd grade.
3rd Grade:
If a student does not take or does not pass the IREAD, under State Board rule, schools must provide additional intervention(s) for these students and, in some cases, retain the student in third grade. This includes attending summer reading camp in the month of June. The student will also need to retake the IREAD the following year. It is important to note that the IREAD will also be given during Summer 2024 for 3rd-grade students who cannot test during the spring testing window or who do not pass and need to retake it.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. You can learn more about IREAD here. You may access practice test items here. In addition, students will be completing practice questions to ensure they are familiar with the question format and testing system.
Sincerely,
Tyler Abel
Principal
